My name is Phillip Gray and I love going outdoors riding on skates and scooters. I work as a graphic designer and I love creativity. This is why I appreciate the different creative scooter’s designs. I’ve been riding on kick scooters ever since I was 5 and one of my early scooters had grown-up together with me.
What Should I Look for When Buying a Scooter
Now everywhere in our cities, scooters (electric or manual) represent the new and fashionable means of transport.
Ecological and quiet, it will accompany you with ease in all your daily travels. Whether it’s in addition to or in place of your usual transport, a scooter brings the pleasure of driving seamlessly in the middle of traffic.
Are you planning to buy a new ride in 2021, but are lost among all the models and different features?
Here are 10 questions to ask yourself when choosing a scooter to buy. These questions apply to both electric and manual models and will help you with the things you look at when buying a riding transport.
- Where and how do I use the scooter?
First of all, to choose a personal riding transport, it is important to define the use that one will make of it. Are you considering buying a children’s scooter or an adult ride? How often will you use your machine? Should you carry it when using public transit?
The answer to these questions will allow you to define the characteristics of the ride to buy. For a journey of less than 6 km per day, just use an entry-level model. On the other hand, for a longer journey, it is advised to get something that is a powerful and comfortable model.
- How much budget do I have?
Prices range from $25 (children) to up to $500 (adult/electric). It is possible to find entry-level models for adults for $59. However, if you are looking for a reliable and powerful model, you should have a budget of between $100 and $130 for adult manual models. For Motorized models, the price could be higher at $300.
Prices generally vary depending on several factors: the type of battery, the materials used, the equipment, and options… Etc. However, some motorized models that sell for less than $500 (such as the Xiaomi M365 motorized model) are good value for money.
- Does the manufacturer offer a quality after-sales service?
The quality of after-sales service is a decisive criterion to consider when purchasing any type of mobility vehicle.
Generally, serious brands are distinguished by the large size of their distribution network and licensed repairers. Before you buy personal transport, first make sure the builder has a repair center that is not too far from where you live. Quality after-sales service involves the availability of spare parts, the speed of processing of warranty files, the quality of reception… Etc. It is also clever to favor a seller with a strong presence on social networks and riding forums.
- What are the characteristics of the electric motor (if buying a motorized model)?
The motor is the heart of the electric vehicle. Its characteristics largely determine the vehicle’s performance, including its speed, acceleration, and ability to climb a hill. Virtually all new motorized vehicles are driven by a brushless motor built into one of the wheels. When buying a motorized ride, you need to pay close attention to three main features: power, torque, and maximum speed.
Expressed in Watt, the power indicates the amount of energy provided by the engine for a second. An engine with a power of 750 W, for example, provides 3 times more energy per second than a 250W engine.
Torque represents the force of movement generated by the engine when it spins. It is expressed in Nm. As a general rule, the more torque an engine has, the more capable it is even in challenging road conditions.
In addition, the higher the engine power, the higher the maximum speed of the machine, the faster the battery will tend to discharge.
It is not always advantageous to choose the fastest model. The main thing is to opt for a good compromise engine power/battery life.
- What are the characteristics of the battery?
Whatever the performance of the motor, it is worth nothing without a good battery! The performance of the motorized vehicle is therefore largely conditioned by the characteristics of the battery:
- Technology
- Capacity
- The voltage
- Autonomy
- The charging time
- What are the dimensions and weight of a scooter?
A compact, lightweight scooter is perfect for daily rides, especially if you have to carry it on public transport, or on stairs.
Several factors influence the weight of the electric scooter: the materials used to make the chassis, the type of battery, the braking system, and the type of engine.
It is, therefore, advised to choose a light and space-saving scooter. Ideally, the weight should be less than 18 kg (39lbs) for motorized models, and less than 11lbs (4.9kgs) for manual kick rides.
- Is an electric scooter comfortable?
That’s a basic question! Obviously, a scooter should be comfortable, especially if you plan to use it on long trips.
For a comfortable ride, choose a model with the following:
- A depreciation system.
- Large inflatable wheels (8 inches or more).
- A handlebar that is adjustable in height and has ergonomic handles.
- A wide deck with a non-slip coating.
- A quick and easy-to-handle folding system.
- A comfortable braking control.
- Is the electric scooter safe?
As a full-fledged mode of transportation, the safety of driving should never be treated lightly. Make sure the vehicle is equipped with an effective braking system to avoid the risk of accidents.
While entry-level products are equipped only with mechanical friction brakes, premium products are equipped with a more powerful magnetic brake typically integrated into the rear wheel.
Ideally, a scooter with a front and rear disc braking system and a magnetic brake should be chosen. The chassis must also be robust enough to withstand the weight of the user and to withstand the weather conditions.
- What are the accessories provided with the scooter?
In addition to basic equipment, some designs are equipped with very practical accessories (mostly for motorized machines)
- A crutch for the parking lot.
- A cruise control to set the speed throughout the journey.
- A display screen to view driving information: battery life, instant speed, ambient temperature, distance traveled total mileage, speed, etc. Some devices also have a Bluetooth interface.
- An LED lighting system at the front and rear.
- An anti-theft system.
What does the legislation say about the use of electric scooters?
Before buying an electric scooter, it is a good idea to find out about the legal aspect of using this type of vehicle. Since July 2020, new rules have come into force for the use of Motorized Personal Travel Devices (EDPM). It is therefore important to keep yourself informed on the subject in order to avoid a fine during your electric scooter journeys. Check your local road and safety rules for more specific information.
